Black Isle Brewery

Black Isle was started by David Gladwin in 1998. An unemployed beer lover, he set out to make world class beer using barley and hops grown on organic farms as nature intended, without the use of destructive chemicals.

Today we can brew up to 10,000 litres a day packaged in bottles, casks and kegs. We ship beer all over Scotland, the UK and around the world from Sweden to Japan.

The Black Isle is famous for the quality of its malting barley and it was here on our farm called Allangrange, that Sir Roderick Mackenzie recorded, in the Statistical Account of 1790, that the land was first cultivated for growing barley because it was found to be of “superior quality for the brewer and distiller.” Thanks Rod!

The brewery has bought 125 acres and turned it into a working organic farm growing organic barley to make our delicious beer. We grow our own barley but not quite enough for the amount we need in the brewery and so we also buy some barley from other local organic farms.

We have 200 black Hebridean sheep that were rustled 10 years ago from the Culloden Battlefield and a beautiful jersey cow that produces milk for our tea and coffee. The spent grain from the brewery mash tun is fed to our livestock, which also includes hens and horses.

We see ourselves and what we do as a natural link between our traditional cultural heritage and the contemporary craft beer world.
